Dinosaur Highway in Liberty Hill

Yes, in Liberty Hill, come see them

Did you know Liberty Hill boasts dinosaur tracks?   Dinosaur tracks are known to be imprinted in the limestone rock bed of the South San Gabriel River upstream from the Highway 183 bridge over the river. According to a paleontologist at The University of Texas at Austin, one dinosaur track was known to be present in the bed of the stream channel on the downstream side of the bridge. However, this dinosaur track may have been vandalized and removed by unknown individuals in past years.

Going south on 183, turn right onto Signal Hill.  When Signal Hill dead-ends, turn to the right.  You will park in the cul-de-sac at the end, near the chain-link fence.  Just to the left of the chain link fence is an opening with a definite trail.  This trail will take you to the San Gabriel River.  Be sure to go when the river is running low and there has not been rain recently, otherwise the tracks will not be visible as they’ll be under water.  Be careful, the trail can be steep and slippery, but it definitely is a family adventure.  You can also park on

the west side of 183 where the road passes over the South San Gabriel and walk upstream about 1/2 a mile.  I’ve found this way to be blocked in the past due to the river running slightly high or masses of bees!

As you get to the end of the decent, go to the right a bit.  Jumping off the limestone into the dried riverbed, you CAN NOT miss the eight or so tracks, as long as the river is not running high.  If it’s running high, the tracks will be underwater.  The less rain we’ve had, the better your chances of seeing them.  I recommend taking a cup of some sort.  The best pictures are taken by scooping some water out of the river and putting it in the track as it helps the contrast.  Yes, you can get right up to the tracks and step in them.  It’s truly amazing.
